Nicholas Krushenick made "Crossover" with flat areas of unmodulated colour and clear, sharp lines. I'm imagining Krushenick relishing in the immediacy of laying down these bold colours, straight from the tube to the canvas. You know, it’s not always about some deep meaning but the sheer pleasure of seeing what happens when colours meet. I'm interested in how the image balances control and spontaneity; it's like Krushenick is having a conversation between his calculated compositional structure, and more impulsive, gestural marks. That jagged edge where the yellow meets the stripes is so alive. It suggests a tear, a rupture. When I look at this I feel as if I'm witnessing an energetic exchange, maybe even a debate. Painters have always borrowed from one another, it’s a constant dialogue across decades, and Krushenick is part of that conversation. We take what we need, twist it, and make it our own, hoping to find a new way of seeing.
