Bernardo Strozzi made this drawing of a monk holding a book in the 17th century, using black chalk heightened with white chalk, on gray paper. The texture of the paper is crucial here. Strozzi’s layering of chalk allows him to create a tonal range from light to dark, giving the figure a sense of depth and volume. The softness of the chalk lends itself well to capturing the monk’s contemplative mood. Drawing was a key part of an artist’s training at this time. It was a way to practice observation and master techniques of shading and proportion, often in preparation for larger paintings. Chalk was a readily available material, not costly like paints and canvases. As such, it democratized the creative process, making art accessible to a wider range of people. The choice of materials and processes therefore influences not only the appearance of the artwork, but also its social and cultural significance. They bridge the gap between the artist’s intention and the viewer’s interpretation, providing a more profound understanding of artistic creation.
