Lucien Pissarro made this painting of the Rue De Poulfenc À Riec, probably en plein air, with oil on canvas. I’m looking at this road winding through a field. It's pretty subdued, and there are so many greens, browns, and greys working together. I can imagine Pissarro layering those colors, trying to capture how light falls on the foliage and stone walls. Was he thinking about his dad, Camille? As a painter, you're always trying to find your own voice, even if you're in dialogue with someone you admire. There’s a heaviness to the brushstrokes, but the light and the color lift it. You can see him, brush in hand, trying to get the feeling of that place just right. I love to think about painters in conversation with one another across time and space. It’s one big, ongoing discussion about seeing and feeling.
