Blackpool Vale, Devon 1921

Lucien Pissarro painted this landscape, Blackpool Vale, Devon, with oil on canvas, and wow, what a painterly scene he's created! I’m thinking about Lucien standing there with his brushes, trying to capture the light and shadow playing across those rolling hills. It’s like he's inviting us to stroll through the countryside with him. The paint is laid down in these short, choppy strokes – notice how the grass is a tapestry of greens and yellows, and the trees have this lovely, soft texture? It’s almost like he’s built the landscape up, piece by piece. That sky, too, has these muted, chalky hues – a bit like looking at a Turner, you know?
