George Clausen sketched "Man en vrouwen uit Marken" capturing the essence of figures from Marken, likely using pencil or charcoal. Here we see rapid notations and quick studies, filled with numeric scribbles to seize the image. The figures, though rudimentary, appear to stand in for the artist's attempt to capture the essence of the human form. Compare them to the 'Nymph' motif of Classical antiquity, a symbol that has come to be associated with natural beauty and purity. Yet here, these figures are robbed of such idealisation, and are depicted as mundane. The hasty lines seem to trap the figures, perhaps reflecting a tension between external ideals and the subjective experience. The quick marks, much like flashes of memory, resurface, evolve, and gain new meaning across time.
