This sketch of figures and architecture was made by George Hendrik Breitner, probably on paper, and it’s like a visual note-taking. I like to imagine Breitner outside, maybe in a park or square, quickly capturing the essence of what he saw. The lines are sparse, almost hurried, like he’s trying to catch a fleeting moment. You can almost feel his hand moving across the page, deciding what to include, what to leave out. There’s a real energy in that process, a sense of urgency. It's interesting, this idea of a sketch as a raw, unfiltered expression of seeing. It makes me think about the relationship between observation and mark-making, and how a simple line can convey so much information, so much feeling. These kinds of drawings remind me that art is an ongoing conversation.
