Alexander Calder made this print, Galactic System, with lithographic ink on paper. I love how he uses just a few colors—blue, yellow, orange, and black—to create this sense of dynamic movement. It reminds me that artmaking is really about play, you know, pushing and pulling at the materials and seeing what happens. The surface is flat and smooth, typical of lithography, but the composition feels so alive! Look at how the solid black lines twist and turn, creating a kind of scaffolding for the other shapes. The orange and yellow stripes vibrate against the blue, making your eyes dance around the print. There’s this one blue shape, kind of like a teardrop with a tail, that seems to float in the middle of everything, tethered but also free. Calder was a master of movement, and you can see that even in his prints. It’s like he’s captured the energy of the cosmos in these simple shapes. The way he uses color reminds me of Miró, but with Calder, there’s always this sense of underlying structure, like a hidden engineering at play. Art's an ongoing conversation, right? A dialogue that never really ends, and that's what makes it so great!
