ALCHEMY 2019

Sergio Mario Illuminato has created a 50 by 70 cm painting called ALCHEMY, worked with broad sweeping gestures across the surface. There's a curious mix of earthy browns and vibrant blues and greens. I can imagine Sergio, brush in hand, layering these colors, letting them mingle and merge. See the way the paint is dragged across the canvas, almost like he’s pushing and pulling at the very fabric of the painting. The surface looks built up, like he’s been wrestling with it, trying to find the right balance, the right feel. There are these curious semi-circular marks across the top, feels like some kind of secret code or maybe just a doodle. It’s a fascinating dance between control and chaos, isn’t it? It reminds me a bit of Cy Twombly, actually. I can see a similar interest in mark-making. Painting is like an ongoing conversation, a constant exchange of ideas. Each artist builds on what came before, and it’s this connection across time that makes it all so interesting. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning.
