This is a print about the life of Frank van Borsselen, who died in 1470, made by J. Schuitemaker in the Netherlands. Prints such as this were part of a wider culture of popular education, bringing historical and moral tales to a broad public. In this case, the artist combined the visual with the verbal, placing the images within a magazine especially for young people. Notice how the artist represents the characters and locations within the narrative, and consider what kind of impression of life in the 15th century he wanted to give to his young audience. What do we know about Dutch life at the time, and what aspects of it are represented here? Further research into the printing industry and popular education in the Netherlands during the 19th century would help us better understand its cultural significance.
