Richard Diebenkorn made this standing nude resting her knee on a support with ink on paper. Isn't it interesting how quickly he got this down? The confidence and directness of each brushstroke, like he was just going for it. I love that. I wonder what kind of brush he used? There are thin lines and thick pools of ink. Look at the way the ink bleeds slightly into the paper. You can almost feel the wetness of the ink, the speed of his hand. But then there are these odd shapes and details. See the black rectangle near her waist? I find Diebenkorn’s work so exciting because you can feel the artist thinking, seeing, and making, all at once. Like a Cy Twombly drawing, this piece embodies the conversation between the artist and the artwork, the push and pull, the back and forth. What's great is that we get to listen in.
