This is an anonymous portrait of William II, King of the Netherlands, made with an engraving technique. In the 19th century, representing leaders on horseback was a powerful symbol. It suggested authority, control, and a direct connection to military strength. But it also told a story about class and power. William, adorned in his military attire, embodies the traditional, patriarchal structures of his time. Consider the gaze of both horse and rider; they are in sync and seem to look directly at the viewer. This creates an emotional tension as if we, the viewers, are being scrutinized and assessed. In its time, this portrait reinforced the status quo. Looking at it today, we might reflect on how representations of power have evolved and on the individuals often left out of such portrayals.
