Curatorial notes

This sketchbook page of biblical scenes was made by Niels Larsen Stevns sometime in his lifetime with pencil on paper. It's all about the simplicity of the drawn line. I love how Larsen Stevns lays out these draft scenes. It feels like seeing the artist think, watching him work things out. You can almost feel the give and take, the layering of one line on top of another. Look at the figure kneeling near the bottom left - you can see how Larsen Stevns reworked the back to find the perfect contour. It's a glimpse into his process, and that's something really special. This sketch reminds me a little of Kathe Kollwitz's drawings. Both artists have a way of capturing deep emotion with just a few simple lines. And just like Kollwitz, Larsen Stevns isn't afraid to leave things open-ended, letting the viewer fill in the blanks. Art is never about one single, fixed meaning, is it? It's about sparking a conversation.
