This sketchy drawing of biblical scenes was made by Niels Larsen Stevns at an unknown date, probably with graphite on paper. It’s interesting to see the artist thinking through his composition. I imagine him searching for the right arrangement. He’s feeling his way through the narrative with lines, trying out different groupings of figures. Look at the bottom of the page. Notice the figure kneeling in the lower left. See how the artist has given their outline a bit more weight, pressing harder into the paper? It feels like he's using the act of drawing as a way to explore the emotional weight of the scene. Painters are always in conversation with each other. I see echoes of earlier artists here – maybe someone like Giotto? The arrangement of figures reminds me of early Renaissance frescoes. What do you think?
