David Paul Lasry made this untitled print on paper. It looks like he printed an image of a doorway using dark brown ink. The ink is applied in a way that feels both intentional and accidental; it's like Lasry allowed the process to guide the final image. I find myself wondering about the texture of the surface he printed from. Notice how the ink isn't evenly distributed, but has a kind of mottled effect, like it's been applied to a slightly rough surface. The edges are also softly blurred in places. It gives the image a ghostly feel, as if the doorway is fading into the paper. Thinking about other artists who play with similar ideas, maybe someone like Robert Ryman, who used really simple color schemes and marks? Art’s always just folks playing off each other, a conversation, really. Anyway, I love how Lasry embraces this ambiguity, inviting us to project our own experiences and interpretations onto the image.
