David Paul Lasry made this artwork in an unknown year using unknown materials, and what we see is a sort of ghost-like, layered rectangular form in faded browns. You know, I can imagine Lasry in the studio, maybe experimenting with different ways of applying paint, wiping it away, and building up these subtle textures. It feels like a process of excavation, like uncovering something hidden beneath the surface. There's a beautiful tension between control and chance here. See the way the pigment gathers in certain areas, creating these almost accidental marks. The way the paint is thin in some areas and thick in others gives it this incredible depth. It reminds me of other artists who are also interested in process and materiality, like Robert Ryman or even Agnes Martin. These folks are all in conversation, exploring the limits and possibilities of painting. For me, it's about embracing uncertainty, allowing for multiple readings and meanings, and always leaving room for the unexpected.
