Curator: This photograph is titled "Vaas met kievitsbloemen en een oever van een beek," which translates to "Vase with fritillaries and a riverbank" and it's by Henry W. Taunt from before 1912. What strikes you most when you look at it? Editor: Well, it's interesting that the composition is divided into two distinct scenes: the still life of the fritillaries in the vase above and the outdoor landscape below. It's not your typical still-life-landscape combination. What do you make of that choice? Curator: Observe how the photographs offer studies in contrasts and complements, both formal and philosophical. The texture and gradient variance contribute toward dynamic form of study. Consider the verticality versus horizontality implied from scene selection. We might think of that to imply more depth, but then consider the shallow depth-of-field effect in these photos. What becomes clear? Editor: I suppose the flatness of the photograph then almost blends the two images into the same space despite representing very different places and states of nature. How are we supposed to read that contrast of cultivated and natural space? Curator: Quite right. Is there not something also about death to notice here? A stillness in the upper register that suggests being stilled by art or a lens? Is it meant as merely illustrative, or does the landscape act to reinforce certain semiotics? Editor: The flower arrangement has that static quality that certainly points to capturing a moment versus just appreciating something growing. I hadn't thought about that relationship! Curator: Indeed. Thinking critically in the present tense makes artworks continue breathing in our contemporary moment. It continues a rich tradition. What would you like to look at next?
