This is Robert Frank’s “Flowers on Cadillac hearse--Early New York City 3,” a photogram, so no date. It looks like a selection of frames from a roll of film with a few frames circled in orange. For me, it's about the process of selecting images. The texture of the film is so beautiful, I mean, the grainy quality of the black and white, the way the light and shadow play across each frame. The circled frames invite us to look closer, to consider what caught Frank's eye. It's like he’s saying, "Hey, pay attention to this," but also, "Why this?". The frame on the second row, the hearse, I love that we are peering into the window. Does this relate to Frank's interest in mortality? I wonder if Rauschenberg, a contemporary, saw this, and what he might have made of it. Ultimately, it's a reminder that art is always an ongoing dialogue, an open-ended conversation.
