Robert Frank made this piece, "From the bus 5," by taking photographs, probably at different times, of things he saw. I love how he shows us the whole strip, with the numbers and writing right on the film, because it feels like he’s letting us in on the behind-the-scenes stuff. It’s like he's saying, "Here's how I do it, folks." Looking at the film, you get a sense of what caught Frank's eye—street scenes, buildings, maybe even some interesting garbage! It's raw and unedited. It’s all about the rhythm of seeing and recording, and it reminds me of how, as artists, we're always editing and making choices. Frank reminds me a lot of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer who captured life as it happened. Like Winogrand, Frank embraces the messiness and chance encounters of daily life. And maybe that's the real art – seeing the beauty in the everyday chaos.
