Timothy Cole made this print of Dr. John Allen, but the date is unknown. I love the way that light is used to create a scene of domestic tranquility. There is a real sense of intimacy in this portrait, that is achieved by Cole's subtle application of light and shadow. The texture is smooth, almost velvety, and the monochromatic palette gives it a timeless quality. Look closely, and you will see the small hatch marks Cole used to create the subtle tonal gradations that build form and describe the texture of skin and cloth. It's a testament to Cole's skill as a printmaker that he could achieve such a range of values with just a few simple marks. This print reminds me of the etchings of Rembrandt, who was also a master of light and shadow. Like Rembrandt, Cole seems to be interested in capturing the inner life of his subjects, rather than just their outward appearance. Art is just one big conversation across time, don't you think?
