Curatorial notes

This 16th-century decoration for a dagger sheath, created by the artist known only as Monogrammist AC, presents a fascinating array of symbols. The winged putto, derived from classical antiquity, is here juxtaposed with grotesque masks, embodying a tension between innocence and the macabre, life and death. The putto, seemingly suspended, recalls the ancient motif of the soul’s ascent, a theme that finds echoes in religious art across cultures. Consider, for instance, the depictions of angels in medieval altarpieces—messengers between the earthly and divine realms. Yet, here, the putto is bound to a weapon, a potent symbol of both protection and aggression. The image is thus emotionally charged. This visual language, laden with historical and cultural weight, speaks to a collective memory, a subconscious recognition of primal forces at play. The viewer is invited to confront the complex interplay of these symbols, each carrying its own history, its own echoes of the past.
