Editor: This engraving, *Putto met een leeg schild* by Sebald Beham, created sometime between 1510 and 1550, is really intriguing. The winged child has such a serious expression, especially holding that empty shield. What do you see in this piece? Curator: Well, I immediately think of the symbols of power and representation, and their perceived lack. Here we have a putto, typically representing innocence or divine love, but he's burdened by a helmet, oak leaves representing strength, and holding a blank shield. It begs the question: What is *missing* here? What story should be told on this shield, and whose story is it? Editor: That's a really interesting point! I hadn't thought of it that way, as something missing rather than simply a blank slate. So, is the emptiness intentional, suggesting a loss of something? Curator: Precisely! Think about the time this was created – a period of great religious and social upheaval. The empty shield might symbolize the uncertainty or anxiety of the era, perhaps the loss of traditional authority. The orb at his feet also carries weight, hinting at the world and the earthly responsibilities now placed upon this child. Editor: So, even a seemingly simple image like a putto can carry all this cultural memory and meaning. Curator: Absolutely. Beham uses these recognizable symbols, and then inverts our expectations, to make us consider what we *think* we know, and the underlying truths that visuals conceal. It's a potent commentary delivered through a familiar, cherubic form. What do you make of the contrast between the figure’s soft, fleshy form and the cold, hard metal of the helmet and shield? Editor: It makes me think about vulnerability versus protection…a sort of innocence versus the harshness of the world that it's forced to confront. Curator: Exactly! I learned so much just exploring the work from that perspective. Editor: Me too! It's amazing how much depth can be found in even a single engraving.
