Here is a page of bird studies by Niels Larsen Stevns. I love how these little drawings are like fleeting thoughts. I wonder what Stevns was thinking, what he was looking at, as he quickly sketched these birds. Were they in flight? Perched? Were they singing? I imagine him trying to capture the essence of their movement, their lightness, with just a few strokes of his pencil. You know, drawing like this is like trying to catch a dream. It's about distilling something complex into its simplest form. There is a freedom in Stevns' approach. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbles, or even some of Picasso's quick sketches. Artists looking at artists, learning from each other across time. And that’s how art evolves, right? A never-ending conversation.
