playing with light
Editor: This installation, "Void" by Chul Hyun Ahn, created in 2011, is just mesmerizing. The blue light seems to stretch into infinity. How would you interpret this play with light and space? Curator: The immediate impact stems from its geometric purity. Observe the square format: the crisp, clean lines articulating a seemingly endless recession. The artist is manipulating our perception through a rigorously controlled structure. Note how the light, almost electric in its intensity, amplifies this sense of depth, but without actually breaking the picture plane, in the literal sense. Do you notice any subtle changes in tone along the edges of each frame? Editor: Yes, as the lines recede into the void, the blue seems to deepen and darken. Does that progression have significance in your opinion? Curator: Precisely. It serves to heighten the illusion, contributing to the perceptual push and pull of near and far. We are confronted with what appears to be limitless space contained within a finite form. It is about how form, color and perception shape meaning and create art. This internal dynamism in visuality constructs meaning. Editor: It's interesting to think about how much impact comes from these design elements. Curator: Indeed. This piece is fundamentally concerned with formal relationships. Understanding the impact of form on our perception, and the perception of spatial boundaries, is very thought-provoking. Thank you for making me see the artwork from a renewed perspective.
