Dimitris Mytaras made 'Interior', in 1955, and in it, broad brushstrokes mix blues, blacks, and whites in a high contrast palette. Just looking at this, I can feel the artist feeling his way through the painting, shifting, almost sculpting the shapes on the canvas. There are areas where the paint looks thick, almost sculptural, and other spots where it's been scraped back, revealing layers underneath. I love that quality of trial and error—it's like the painting is teaching the painter as it emerges. That big blue mass dominates everything. It feels like a presence, or maybe it's a shadow, but the more I look at it, the more it seems to be holding the whole composition together. And see those white marks underneath? They give the blue an energy, as if the picture is still in motion. For me, painting is an embodied form of expression. It's easy to imagine Mytaras looking at the work of other painters who shared his approach to colour, texture, and form. Painting really is a conversation between artists across time.
