Samuel Peploe made this painting of Comrie in spring with oil on canvas. It’s a symphony of touch, built from visible brushstrokes. I find myself wondering, was this painted in one go? Or was it added to over time? There’s a tactile quality in the layering of paint. Peploe builds up the image through these small, deliberate marks and dabs. Look closely at the bottom left corner. Notice how the paint becomes almost sculptural, capturing the shifting light and texture of the foliage, and the purple underpainting that appears beneath the greens. It feels like Peploe is thinking through paint, allowing the process itself to guide his vision. I’m reminded of Cezanne’s landscapes and his commitment to observation. Both invite us to slow down, to see the world around us not as a fixed image but as an ongoing, evolving process. It’s a conversation, an invitation to look, reflect, and engage with the world in a new way.
