This triptych, created by Katsukawa Shun'ei, depicts actors in various roles, their identities now lost to us. Yet, their symbolic attire speaks volumes. Take the actor on the left, burdened with a farmer's basket. This simple agrarian image carries the weight of centuries. The farmer, a symbol deeply embedded in the collective consciousness, signifies not just labor, but also resilience and connection to the earth. This echoes images of the burdened Atlas, forever carrying the world's weight on his shoulders. Over time, the farmer transforms. He becomes the peasant revolutionary, as seen in Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People. The basket becomes a weapon. What was once a symbol of sustenance evolves into one of resistance. The echo of ancient struggles reverberates. Our subconscious remembers. Thus, the image of the farmer, humble yet potent, continues its journey through time, resurfacing and evolving. Its cyclical existence, laden with memory, reminds us of the enduring human drama played out on the stage of history.
