Editor: Here we have a ceramic vase, dating back to sometime between 1820 and 1850, whose full title translates to something like "beaker vase, part of a set." The studio is known as “De 3 Klokken.” I’m struck by how ornate the decorations are—little vases painted on a bigger vase! What do you make of it? Curator: Well, the double vase thing IS pretty wild, right? I find it totally delightful – meta before meta was even a thing. And those colours! The artist is diving deep into this world of 'Orientalism', blending what they thought was ‘Eastern’ with their own tastes. It’s less about perfect accuracy and more about a feeling, an impression, almost like a ceramic dream. What sort of story do you imagine it's trying to tell? Editor: It feels almost like they are trying to recreate this idea of abundance by layering objects and floral designs on top of one another. It's a really decorative object! Curator: Exactly! It’s from a time when decoration wasn’t just decoration. Think about those ‘cabinets of curiosities’— these lavishly decorated objects were status symbols. Someone owning this would be broadcasting their worldly knowledge and sophisticated taste! The blue and ochre tones create this lovely warmth; a total statement piece. It begs the question, in our minimalist age, would something like this still hold the same power? Editor: Perhaps! It’s a lot to take in, for sure. It makes me wonder, though, about the impact these styles had. Thanks! Curator: Likewise! And just maybe it is time to get vases back into vogue? Food for thought, right?
