Vajda Lajos made this saturated space using charcoal on paper in 1940. I imagine Lajos hunched over this piece, consumed by a world of swirling marks. The charcoal is dense, almost like he's digging into the paper, searching for something. He's really committed. You can almost feel his hand moving across the surface, building up these layers of texture and tone. It feels like looking into the depths of the subconscious. The contrast between light and dark creates a real sense of drama. Each stroke seems so deliberate, so full of intention. I imagine the artist's mind was racing with ideas, emotions, memories... Maybe he's wrestling with the chaos of the world around him. The more I look the more it appears to me as if the figure in the image is screaming. It's the type of image that stays with you. Artists inspire one another. The act of painting is an ongoing conversation, and invites multiple interpretations.
