This snuffbox, ornamented with a miniature of Alexander I of Russia, was crafted in the late 18th or early 19th century by Jean Georges. Snuffboxes such as this were luxury goods, and their exchange was part of the political and diplomatic culture of Europe. The image of Alexander I is fascinating, not least because it presents a very specific visual code. Alexander is shown in military garb. The message is clear: This is a man of power and authority. The creation and circulation of such objects speak volumes about the role of art in constructing and maintaining power during this era. To understand it better, we can research the diplomatic history of the time, the luxury goods market, and the institutions of monarchy and empire. Only by understanding the social conditions of its making can we start to understand its cultural importance.
