This George Washington banner was created by Michael Trekur, but we're unsure exactly when. What is clear is the symbolic language employed. Here, Washington appears in a domestic pastoral setting, his horse drinking from a stream, and his hand holding a letter - all symbols of peace and statesmanship. The patriotic red and white stripes evoke the American flag, the blue-starred shields above and below further the nationalistic theme. Notice also the liberty bell. These elements tap into a visual code deeply rooted in American identity. We must ask, what social conditions give rise to such symbolism? To answer, we need to ask who would have commissioned this banner, and for what purpose? Was this for a political rally, a school, or a private home? Understanding the banner's function and audience allows us to interpret its meaning within a specific social and institutional context. Further research into Trekur's other works and the historical events surrounding his life might shed more light on the banner's intended message.
