Alexander Rodchenko’s ‘Construction’ is a sketch made with ink and gouache, an insight into the visual language born from the tumult of early 20th-century Russia. Rodchenko was a pivotal figure in the Constructivist movement, a movement which sought to merge art with technology and industry to reflect a new communist society. His approach was deeply influenced by his commitment to social change and the belief that art should serve the revolution. In this work, we see the aesthetic principles of Constructivism: geometric forms, dynamic compositions, and an emphasis on functionality, an emphasis on a utopian vision for the built environment. The red banners boldly proclaim political slogans, marrying art with propaganda. This piece is less about traditional beauty and more about the energy and aspiration of a society in transformation. It embodies the revolutionary spirit of its time, reflecting a desire to break from the past. It leaves you with the question of how art can not only reflect but also actively shape society.
