Honoré Daumier created this lithograph, titled "A method to make it walk without advancing," during a period of significant social and political change in France. As a satirical commentary, the image critiques the notion of 'progress' under a government that purported to advance society while, in reality, maintaining the status quo. The horse, blindered by the word "progress," walks in circles, tied to a central structure reminiscent of a mill. Daumier uses this image to speak to his own experience of French society. He offers a pointed critique of systems that appear to move forward but are, in fact, stagnant, and speaks to the experience of many marginalized people during this time. It invites reflection on how language can obscure rather than reveal the true nature of societal change.
