Torii Kotondo made this print, Summer Geisha, using the woodblock technique. I find it amazing how the flat planes of color create a space that feels both decorative and deeply personal. It's like he's inviting us into a quiet, intimate moment. The blues in the background, the textures in the Geisha’s gown – they're all so carefully considered. I’m drawn to the way the colors interact, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere despite the flatness of the surface. See how the white of her skin pops against the cool blue behind her? Think about the hands holding the fan, too. They're so delicately rendered, yet they convey a sense of strength and poise. It reminds me a little of Utamaro, who also had a knack for capturing the beauty and complexity of women. It’s this ongoing conversation through time and art, each artist building on what came before.
