Iseult Labote’s ‘Exo Mattresses n°V’ captures a bed, perhaps in paint, but more likely with a camera. The bed is made, but rumpled, with its sheets and blankets a cascade of oranges and earth tones. I think about Labote there, seeing the poetry in this everyday scene. What compelled her to capture this moment? Maybe it's about finding beauty in the mundane, like Chantal Ackerman filming her apartment. The muted palette feels intimate, a whispered secret. The textures are palpable. You can almost feel the roughness of the bare wall, the softness of the pillow. It's this push and pull between comfort and starkness that holds you. Artists like Labote remind us to look closer, to find stories in the spaces we inhabit. They’re part of a long lineage, really. Each one builds on the last.
