Giuseppe Antonio Landi created this print, “Fantastic Garden with a Fountain and a Garden Pavilion," using etching. Note the fountain's tiered structure, rising towards the sky like an obelisk, a form which has been associated with divinity and power since ancient Egyptian times. Here, it presents as a ziggurat, a temple, a stairway to heaven. Water, of course, is life-giving, associated with purity and renewal. This symbol of rising power recurs in various forms across cultures and times. Think of the Tower of Babel, or even the Washington Monument. The striving for height seems intrinsically linked to humanity’s aspiration for transcendence. Consider how these forms tap into our collective memory, evoking deep-seated feelings of awe and reverence. It's not merely about aesthetics; it's about the subconscious pull these images exert, connecting us to our ancestors and their aspirations. Indeed, this image reminds us that symbols are never static; they are in constant flux, shaped by the currents of history and culture.
