This Colcha is an anonymous work of art made with watercolor and graphite on paper. I love that it embraces the raw, iterative nature of the art-making process. The palette is simple, almost like a paint-by-numbers, with each color carefully considered. The texture is smooth, the colors are flat, and there's a real sense of geometry in the way the artist has approached the design. Look at the way the different floral elements are arranged, each one like a little experiment in form and color. It reminds me a bit of the work of pattern painters like Joyce Kozloff, who used repeated motifs to create a sense of visual rhythm. But with this piece, there’s a looseness, an improvisational quality. I like that it doesn’t feel too precious. It feels open and inviting, like a conversation just waiting to happen.
