This gilded wood frame, called "Carta Gloria," was created by Leandro Gagliardi in the 18th century. Look closely, and you’ll see that it is not just painted gold, but fully gilded, with a thin layer of gold leaf painstakingly applied to the surface. The frame's elaborate forms, like the acanthus leaves and scrolling curves, take on a rich and shimmering presence from the gold, which would have reflected candlelight beautifully. To create such an object required expertise in carving, gilding, and finishing techniques, embodying a high degree of skill and artistry. The design, material and methods speak to the values of the time period, and the patron who would have owned such a refined object. Considering all the labor and artistry involved in producing this frame, it transcends the traditional distinction between fine art and craft. It asks us to appreciate the artistry involved in its making.
