Niels Larsen Stevns made this drawing, titled Blomsterstudier, or Flower Studies, with pen on paper. Isn’t it funny how just a few lines can suggest so much? Stevns really captures the essence of these flowers with such economy. I love the way the lines are kind of scratchy and uneven, you can see the hand of the artist. Look at the way he’s used hatching to create the shadows on the leaves, it feels so alive. It makes me think of a garden, or just walking through a field and noticing all the little details. You can almost feel the texture of the paper, and it’s really interesting to see how the pen interacts with it. The way the ink bleeds a little in places gives the drawing a sense of depth and atmosphere. What I enjoy most about this sketch is that it feels like a direct connection to the artist’s process. It's a glimpse into their way of seeing and experiencing the world. It reminds me of Klimt's drawings, simple but filled with emotion. Art is an ongoing conversation.
