Hendrick Goltzius created this Arcadian Landscape as a pen drawing in grey ink around 1590, during the Northern Renaissance. This was a period marked by the rise of humanism and a renewed interest in classical antiquity. Goltzius presents an idealistic vision of pastoral life. A shepherd sits with his flock, surrounded by lush vegetation, rocky terrain, and a distant cityscape, evoking a sense of harmony and tranquility. However, we should remember that the concept of Arcadia often glossed over the harsh realities of rural life. It was more of a projection of urban desires onto an imagined countryside. There is a performative aspect to this piece. The shepherd and his flock are arranged in a picturesque manner, almost as if they are posing for the viewer. They are meant to be admired, rather than understood as laborers within a specific socio-economic context. This Arcadian landscape is therefore not just a depiction of nature, but also a reflection of the social values and cultural ideals of Goltzius’ time.
