This print, created by an anonymous artist around 1550-1570, features four distinct scenes. Two depict female figures: Artemisia, possibly mourning her husband Mausolus, and Dido, the Queen of Carthage, committing suicide by fire. The third depicts the Italian writer Pietro Aretino, known for his scandalous writings, in a profile portrait. The fourth portrays Michelangelo, the famed artist, in a framed portrait. The combination of literary figures, historical events, and artistic personalities in this single print reflects the intellectual and cultural landscape of Renaissance Italy.
Comments
In order to waste as little paper as possible, multiple copper plates were often printed on a single sheet. The sheets were then cut and the prints sold individually. Zobel must have acquired this sheet with four different small prints when the impression had just been pulled from the press, for he included it, uncut, in his album.
