Curatorial notes
Johannes Tavenraat captured this house with a thatched roof, surrounded by trees, in a drawing. Note the ladder leaning against the house; it evokes the human desire to ascend, to reach higher ground. The ladder, as a symbol, threads through art history—from Jacob's Ladder in the Old Testament, a symbol of spiritual ascent and divine connection, to its depiction in Renaissance art, representing ambition, or the stages of life. Consider also the roof, a shelter, and a haven. Think of the protective Madonna sheltering the faithful under her cloak, or the various depictions of the Ark, a refuge from chaos. These symbols are not static; the subconscious mind latches onto the architectural structures and imbues it with deeper meaning. The ladder and the roof intertwine, creating a tapestry of protection and aspiration that speaks to us on a primal level, as we seek safety and purpose. These archetypes have changed over time, reflecting our changing relationship with spirituality, safety and shelter.
