This vignette with monogram AWS was designed by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries, we don't know exactly when, but we can still get a lot from it. The whole image is built from solid lines, a combination of geometric shapes and stylized floral and animal forms. The overall effect is bold but the contrast between black and white keeps it from being too aggressive. Take a look at how the lines curve and flow, creating movement within the static form. The texture of the paper gives a tactile quality, suggesting the hand of the artist in its making. Consider the ambiguous nature of this piece, is it a swan, a logo, a flower, or none of these things? It reminds me a bit of Hilma af Klint’s early abstract work, playing with mystical symbols and hidden meanings. Ultimately, this piece celebrates the power of art to transform and transcend, inviting viewers to engage with it on multiple levels.
