Robert Frank made this contact sheet, _Museum of Modern Art 5_, using gelatin silver print. It’s a document of a day, a series of moments all strung together, film sprockets and all. Frank wasn't interested in hiding the process. It's all there on the surface. The physicality of the film is almost more present than the subjects he was photographing! This reminds me a little of Cy Twombly's, a fellow artist who understood how the mark itself could carry meaning. Look at the way Frank captured the people, caught in the act of looking at something. What were they looking at? Each photo is like a little stage, and the eye jumps from scene to scene. It's restless. I think that's the point; art isn't about fixed meaning, but about the ongoing process of seeing and experiencing.
