This is a photograph by Robert Frank, called 'Museum of Modern Art 3,' and it’s on a sheet. I can only imagine what it was like for Frank, wandering around with his camera, thinking, “Okay, what do I want to show here?” He captured these little moments, almost like fleeting thoughts, from an era when photography was really taking off. I love how he includes images, but then he also crosses some out with a red pen; that performative part is something I think about a lot in painting – that the mistakes are as important as the so-called good bits. To cross out is a painterly thing. It’s like saying, “Nope, not this one.” It's a way of questioning what we think is worth showing and what isn't, what is good, what is bad? I find the sheet of images a bit like a painter's studies, or a diary - like thoughts in progress, not resolved outcomes.
