Editor: So, here we have "Priest with two altar boys before an altar", an engraving made in 1661 by Sébastien Leclerc I, currently residing at the Rijksmuseum. It's a busy little print! There's a lot happening in a small space. What I find particularly intriguing is the depiction of a battle scene within what seems like a church interior. What do you make of it? Curator: Indeed. It is the superimposition of those seemingly disparate realities, the sacred and the profane, that unlocks the engraving's symbolic power. Note how the altar itself is framed by that scene of martial conflict; a rather unconventional altarpiece, wouldn't you say? This suggests a conflation of earthly struggles with spiritual devotion. What do you think Leclerc aimed to convey by juxtaposing these elements so dramatically? Editor: I'm not entirely sure, but it's hard not to interpret the battle scene as commentary on the relationship between the church and warfare during the period. Perhaps even linking earthly power struggles with spiritual redemption? Curator: Precisely. The Roman standard "SPQR" within the battle imagery certainly gestures toward earthly empires. Leclerc perhaps wanted to evoke a complex vision of the Catholic church, one encompassing both worldly influence and divine authority. Consider the posture of the priest too - withdrawn in contemplation, his back turned to us, seemingly indifferent to the violence unfolding above. Editor: Now I see how this artwork’s symbology provides such complex emotional, cultural, and psychological meanings. Thank you. Curator: And I understand a bit better how visual memory is key to our own emotional perception of visual works.
