Here's a design for a plate made with watercolor on paper by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet. Just imagine Cachet's hand moving across the page, the brush dancing to create these swirling patterns! You know, it's on grid paper, which is interesting – it's like he's trying to bring order to this organic, flowing design. There’s a flower-like shape in the middle, but everything else is just pure, playful ornamentation. I sympathize with the artist. I'm thinking that maybe Cachet wanted to create something both structured and free-flowing, and it reminds me of the designs of William Morris, who was also trying to bring art into everyday life. Designers are always looking at each other, borrowing, stealing, and riffing off each other. It’s all a big conversation across time, and that’s what makes art so exciting: these echoes and connections that keep inspiring us to create. And hey, maybe you can make a design for a plate too, and see where it leads you!
