Here's a design for a carpet with a star in an ornamented oval made by Dirk Verstraten. I imagine him working on it – perhaps at a big table or desk – layering watercolor washes and fine drawing. There's an embryonic quality to this piece, especially in the bottom right corner, where a swirling design emerges in pale blue-green pencil. The star is a burst of yellow and cream, softened by a surrounding mauve haze. I wonder, was he thinking of textiles he’d seen, or perhaps the color schemes of other artists? The top left corner is almost like a rogue interruption in the carpet design. It's a saturated mix of black, midnight blue, and crimson. To me, it feels like a shadow self or an alternative version of the design. All these things are related, you know, designs, influences, choices, revisions. It's one big conversation over time!
