Abbaten 1900

Søren Lund created this etching titled, Abbaten, using a metal plate to produce a print. Lund was working in a period where traditional social structures were being questioned, and new ideas about identity and faith were emerging. The image shows an abbot, or male head of an abbey, sitting on a park bench, engrossed in reading. His dark, heavy robes contrast with the natural light filtering through the trees. We might consider how the abbot’s identity as a religious figure intersects with his individual experience of contemplation and solitude. During the late 19th century, there was growing tension between religious institutions and secular society.
