This bowl was made by Tshuosh (Sawos) with who knows what. It's all about rhythm and repetition, a dance of forms if you will, carved so it creates something greater than just the sum of its parts. The material's got this lovely, earthy quality. It's not shiny or trying to be something it's not. The carver used tools that give it a real tactile feel. There’s such care and attention given to each tiny, repetitive groove. It’s so detailed, like the artist really wanted to go the distance. Each shape echoes the others, twisting and turning to make a whole. It reminds me a bit of Alfred Jensen, who made these gorgeous paintings with grids and numbers and he thought math was a way to reach enlightenment. It's not about knowing exactly what Tshuosh was thinking, but about feeling how the piece vibrates in the space between us.
