Joyce Kozloff’s “Buffalo Dance” is a painting that organizes itself through patchwork geometry. Look at the surface closely, and you'll notice the texture – a weave of small, almost scribbled marks, filling each shape with subtle variations. It's not about hiding the process here; it's about embracing the physicality of the paint, like laying down mosaic tiles one by one. That lower section of blues and greens feels like a landscape, but it's a landscape built from abstract components. Each color vibrates against its neighbor, creating movement. What is so successful about this piece is that Kozloff embraces geometry but also refuses it. It reminds me of the work of artists like Agnes Martin, who also find ways of combining structure with pure, unadulterated feeling. It’s less about the destination and more about the journey.
