Mathieu Lauweriks made this design for a teapot with pencil on paper, but we don't know exactly when. Look at how Lauweriks is exploring geometry! He’s got circles and squares, a grid structure, trying to bring order to the act of creation. I bet he was thinking about how mathematical principles can be applied to design, searching for the perfect form. He uses multiple views and details – you can see him working through the challenges of translating a 3D object onto a 2D surface. I just love seeing the process, the artist's hand trying to get it right. There are faint lines where he’s adjusted his drawing, seeking balance and harmony in the object’s shape. It reminds me of Josef Albers playing with squares – a similar kind of dedicated exploration. This reminds us that art and design build on each other; artists and designers share ideas, inspiring new ways of seeing and making.
