This plate was made by Joseph Wagner sometime in the 18th century, crafted from earthenware and enamel. The material itself, earthenware, is humble enough, but the technique of enameling elevates the piece. The design, carefully applied by hand, transforms the ordinary clay into a canvas. Notice how the subtle variations in the enamel give depth to the idyllic scene depicted. The plate reminds us of the power of skilled hands to shape not just materials, but also perceptions. It bridges the gap between utilitarian object and artwork. It’s a testament to the labor involved in creating beauty, and it challenges us to consider the value we place on both art and craft.
